Frequently Asked Questions

What does the evaluation consist of?

The evaluation consists of different tests of memory, attention, language, etc. A person’s scores are then compared to what is average for his or her age group. If there are difficulties that go beyond normal age-related changes, the pattern of scores can help determine the underlying cause.

What are possible causes of memory problems?

Memory problems can be due to a variety of conditions including depression, medication effects, vascular changes, Alzheimer’s disease or other medical conditions.

Why is it important to find the cause of any memory changes?

Different disorders have different treatment options. For example, a patient with memory loss due to depression may not benefit from the same treatment as a patient suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Treating memory changes without knowledge of the underlying cause could lead to strain on patients and their families emotionally and financially. Also, if the memory problems are due to a disease process, early detection is important in order to maximize benefits from treatment.

Will insurance cover this evaluation?

Most insurance companies provide coverage for this evaluation. We accept Medicare and most private insurances. It is best to check with your insurance company for specific coverage information.

How do I make an appointment?

A referral from a physician, usually the primary care physician, is required before an appointment can be scheduled. It is best to speak with your doctor if you are having any concerns regarding your memory and if you are interested in a neuropsychological evaluation.
