Schmieding Graduate SpotLight – Andrea

Andrea is currently a senior at an Arkansas university where she will complete the requirements for her Bachelors of Science degree in Biology this spring. She plans to enter a Physician Assistant Program in the fall of 2016.

Andrea says, “I have a sixteen year old brother with many birth defects; one being cerebral palsy. Growing up, I assisted with his care as he participated in medical trials that were related to his other disease processes. These experiences led me to choose a career in medicine.”

“As many graduate schools now require direct patient care experience, I chose to search for a Certified Nursing Assistant class. This certification would assist me in obtaining the required number of patient care hours needed for admittance to a Physician Assistant Program. Also, it would help me be more knowledgeable as I assisted with the day to day care of my brother, thus making me more helpful to my family.”

Andrea further states, “I found the UAMS Schmieding Home Caregiver Training Program – Little Rock and it changed my life! It opened my eyes about being a true caregiver. Also, my participation in this program has opened doors for me! I am currently working as a Multi-Skilled Assistant (CNA with telemetry certification) in Pediatrics at a hospital in my area. I am applying for the Physician Assistant Program at UAMS and other colleges.”

“I am thankful for UAMS Schmieding and all they have taught me.”

We remember Andrea as a diligent student of caregiving who has warmth and compassion for those who need assistance. Her dedication to her training was evident as she traveled over sixty miles per day to attend her UAMS Schmieding CNA preparation classes.
