Family Caregiver Workshop

DEMENTIA CARE AT HOME- Free Workshop

Do you take care of a family member with dementia? Perhaps you manage their medications or talk to doctors and nurses on their behalf. You may even help bathe or dress them, as well as take care of their household chores or prepare their meals. If so, by definition you are a family caregiver. It is reported that an estimated 80% of Arkansas’ older population who are still living in their home depend on family and friends for assistance. Dementia care at home can become more and more challenging. A better understanding of the disease may help families care for their loved one.

The Schmieding Home Caregiver Training Program offers free workshops for family members who are providing unpaid care for an older adult at home. “Learning helpful ways to support and care for someone with dementia can be very important in relieving caregiver stress,” says Linda Willey, RN, Coordinator of Schmieding Home Caregiver Training Program. “This program provides family caregivers with information on better ways to communicate, why some behaviors are challenging, nutrition tips, and activities while maintaining dignity & quality of life.”

This next Dementia Care Workshop will be held on Tuesday, March 25 and Wednesday, March 26 from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. each day at the Schmieding Home Caregiver Training Program, 2813 Forest Home Road in Jonesboro. Attendance is recommended for both sessions, but is not required. Space is limited and registration is necessary by calling 870-207-7600.
