Respite Volunteers Participate in REST Training
Respite Volunteers are shown here getting to know each other as they attend a training workshop in Jonesboro on May 17, 2016. Respite is simply a way of giving a temporary or short-term break to caregivers. These ladies selflessly volunteered their time on this day to learn more about ways to help others or their family members.
When someone cannot care for themselves due to age, disability or other health condition, often a family member becomes a primary caregiver for that person. Due to the enormous stress involved, these caregivers often need and deserve a break. This is where RESPITE comes in. Whether for a short time or extended days, this time of respite can allow a person to run a few errands, take some time to pamper themselves or go on a much needed vacation.
The REST (Respite Education and Support Tools) program is provided by UAMS Schmieding Home Caregiver training program to educate and increase the number of respite caregivers in our community. This training was sponsored by the Arkansas Lifespan Respite Coalition, and was taught by Certified REST trainer, Linda Willey, RN, CDP, CADDCT, who is also Coordinator of the UAMS Schmieding Program in Jonesboro. Lunch and snacks were provided by Legacy Hospice, Unity Health and Families, Inc.
