Nursing Assistant Training Available at UAMS Schmieding
Jonesboro, AR – During 2015, a new law in Arkansas required a core 40 hours of training in an effort to provide Arkansans with high quality caregivers. The UAMS Schmieding program provides the required core curriculum, plus an additional 16 hour Alzhiemer’s Disease and Dementia course, and a 60 hour Home Care assistant course.
The combined 116 hours of coursework meet and exceed the minimum state certification 90 hour eligibility to take the Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A) Examination.
What sets Schmieding apart from other caregiver training programs? Students spend 22 days in the classroom rather than some 10-12 day programs available in our state. This allows students to be better prepared and preferred choice with employers. Schmieding’s hands-on teaching labs and classroom style lectures result in a 90 percent course pass rate statewide.
“We provide more than videos and homework. We excel with a small class ratio of 1 instructor to every 6 students as well as several hours of hands on practice labs,” says Coordinator Linda Willey, RN, CADDCT. “This type of course isn’t one that is especially appropriate as an online course; it has been proven that the extra time we spend physically practicing the skills really makes a difference in learning.” Willey says.
After graduation from the Schmieding program Graduates are:
- Eligible to sit for the state C.N.A exam
- Ready to work with a non-medical private home care agency
- Able to work in a Nursing home while awaiting to take their CNA exam
- Seek a job in a hospital setting as a patient care technician
- Continue their education for a career in Nursing
