Keep a Check on Elderly During Hot Weather
Summertime can bring about extremely hot weather conditions in Arkansas which can become a dangerous situation for older adults. It is of great importance for family and home caregivers to pay attention to their care recipient’s home temperature. Ask yourself, do they have fans, air conditioning or ability to stay cool on those long, hot, dog days of summer?
According to an article on HealthyAging.org, “when temperatures climb above 90 degrees, older adults need to be proactive and take precautions.” While this is true of anyone, the elderly are more likely to experience health problems and nearly 200 Americans die every summer from illnesses caused by high heat and humidity. The article above suggests some tips to stay safe during hot days:
- Stay out of the sun
- Air conditioning is your friend
- Stay hydrated
- Dress appropriately
- Cool down
