A Silent Storm is Approaching
A silent storm is approaching with a rapid increase in the number of people who are achieving “old age.” We keep hearing the phrase – “as the baby boomers age,” but the reality is, as these boomers age into their 80s, there will be a shortage of caregivers to provide the daily support that will be required of this vast population. Families will continue to be the backbone of support for older loved ones, however family caregivers will require more support from others to meet the increased stress and burdens that are certain to occur.
One problem that is certain is that the size of the American family is shrinking. There will be fewer family members who are able to care for aging parents and the demand for paraprofessional caregivers will increase. New solutions must be sought to deal with the issues of delivery and funding for the long term support of this booming aging population.
A recent study has shown that the number of potential family caregivers for an aging loved one will decline by approx 50% in the next 25 – 30 years.
In the midst of this storm is the burning question – who is going to care for me and you? This study shows that the backbone of the family caregiver is breaking down. This void could be filled with professional caregivers. Talk about job security! Many of the baby boomers have made preparations to provide for their future and will be able to afford in-home care as they enter their twilight years. Others may rely on state or federal programs to assist them. Nevertheless, this aging population will not only require home care, they will demand a higher quality than ever before.
The medical issues are likely to be ten-fold higher than we’ve ever seen before simply due to the large numbers of persons who are hitting their golden years. Furthermore, these issues are going to require special training and the baby boomers will more than ever demand the shift to a better “person-centered care.” The WIFI’m (what’s in it for me) generation will insist on the lifestyle they’ve grown up with to continue. Certified caregivers will be head and arms above the rest to provide these services. The unique “Schmieding method” of training caregivers will give you that edge to excel in this field.
In just 13 years, the baby boomers will begin entering their 80s. If not sooner, they will need assistance with the tasks of daily living. What better time to plan for a secure job industry than now?
