{"id":4271,"date":"2018-05-04T11:12:00","date_gmt":"2018-05-04T16:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uamscaregiving.org\/springdale\/?page_id=4271"},"modified":"2026-02-06T13:49:05","modified_gmt":"2026-02-06T19:49:05","slug":"wts","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uamscaregiving.org\/springdale\/wts\/","title":{"rendered":"Walter Turnbow Scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Walter Turnbow is a prominent figure in Springdale and a long time business partner of the Schmieding Center for Senior Health &amp; Education (hereafter, \u201cthe Center\u201d) founder, Lawrence Schmieding. Mr. Turnbow embraced Mr. Schmieding\u2019s vision for programs and services from the Center by serving on multiple councils and committees over the years. Mr. Turnbow\u2019s dedication to the Center has made him truly invaluable. The Walter Turnbow Sustainability Fund was established in his honor to provide financial assistance for education programs at the Center. This fund is a memorial to Mr. Turnbow\u2019s commitment to the Center\u2019s mission to improve the quality of life for older adults and their families in Northwest Arkansas through education and patient care.<\/p>\n<p>The Walter Turnbow Scholarship (WTS) is available to applicants participating in the Center\u2019s Alzheimer\u2019s\/Dementia (AD) and Home Care Assistant (HCA) courses. These courses represent the second and third steps in the unique Schmieding program and are required for CNA certification. Applicants are eligible for these courses after completing the In-Home Assistant training. The AD course is comprised of 16 hours of lecture. The HCA is an additional 60 hours of coursework. HCA students will spend 16 of their 60 course hours in a clinical setting. This hands-on approach enhances learning and adds to the uniqueness of the Schmieding Home Caregiver Training Program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Things to Consider<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This scholarship may cover all or part of the tuition costs for the program. Award amounts will be determined by the scholarship committee.<\/li>\n<li>This scholarship can ONLY be applied to AD and\/or HCA training.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Eligibility Requirements<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Must be 18 years of age or older<\/li>\n<li>Must be able to read\/write in English<\/li>\n<li>Must pass In-Home Assistant training<\/li>\n<li>Must pass criminal background check<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Application Materials<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Application form<\/li>\n<li>Two (2) forms of Government Issued Identification (at least one form of photo ID)\n<ul>\n<li>Acceptable forms of ID include: Social Security Card, Birth Certificate, Driver\u2019s License, State ID card, U.S. Passport, Military ID<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Applicant must submit a Letter of Request that outlines personal\/professional need and career goals <strong>OR<\/strong> the applicant can arrange a face-to-face 30 minute interview with the Schmieding Scholarship Committee. Our committee would like to get to know its applicants.
