Sun Safety: Important for All Ages
Did you know that skin cancer is the most common form of cancer diagnosed in the U.S.? It is actually diagnosed more often than all other forms of cancer, combined. This is an issue in both the younger and older populations. Did you know that one in five Americans will get skin cancer at some point during their lifetime?(1) On the plus side, however, skin cancer is both preventable and treatable. Here are some ways to protect yourself:
- SUNSCREEN! You know you should, but do you wear it ever day? Do you apply it on a daily basis to your face, ears, neck, and other exposed areas? Slather on a thick layer at least 30 minutes before sun exposure, and reapply every 2-3 hours- more often if you are sweating or swimming.
- PROTECTIVE CLOTHING: We know, it’s hot our, but a thin, light shirt over that sleeveless top could prevent you from looking like a lobster tomorrow. You’ll look cooler and those shades and a big, floppy hat, also. Just do it.
- EARLY DETECTION: You know you should check your body regularly for new moles and spots, and changes in those that already exist. But do you? This should be done regularly, every couple of months or so, or perhaps monthly if you have had a history of skin cancer or spend a lot of time in the sun. Skin cancers can come in various colors, shapes, and sizes. Brown, yellow, pink, red, flat, raised, bumpy. The can look like growths or sores or rashes. If you see something new, get it checked out.
