What 3 Things Should a Caregiver Check Routinely in an Older Adult?

According to Kimberley Robertson, RN, our primary instructor for the Schmieding Program in Pine Bluff, there are several things that a caregiver should be alert for in their loved one.  Some of these include:

  1. Home Safety: Are there any safety hazards in the home? Since the majority of falls take place in the home, it is important to be sure your loved one has a safe environment free of fall hazards. Move anything that could cause them to trip or slip, including slippery rugs, phone or electrical cords, small furniture and clutter. Make sure there is good lighting, including a lamp by the bed and nightlights in hallways, bathrooms, the bedroom and kitchen. Always keep a flashlight by the bed in case the power goes out.

2. Changes in Physical Condition:   Are they acting differently? Showing changes in their normal routine?   Do they complain of increased pain or is there evidence of decreased ability to move and take care of everyday tasks such as grooming, eating, etc.  Any change, no matter how subtle, should be noted.

3. Changes in Mental Status:  Examples of changes that might occur can include:  sadness for a long period of time, loss of interest in enjoyable activities, isolating themselves, changes in sleep patterns, angry outbursts, etc.  Any change, again no matter how subtle, should be noted.

Sharing observations with your loved one’s healthcare provider is extremely important.   Keeping a journal of observations can be very helpful in providing as much information as possible so that your loved one can receive the best care available.
