Raising Alzheimer’s Awareness on The Longest Day

Jonesboro –

Students in the Alzheimer’s and Dementia course in Jonesboro are not only learning about dementia, they are also “going purple” for the Longest Day campaign.  Held annually on June 21, the longest day is a campaign of the Alzheimer’s Association to raise funds and awareness for the global epidemic.

Schmieding students become certified in dementia care after 16 hours of classroom study and homework.  Here are just a few of the staggering statistics about Alzheimer’s:

  • More than 5 million Americans are living with the disease.
  • In 2016, 15.9 million American caregivers provided an estimated 18.2 billion hours of unpaid care valued at $230.1 billion.
  • Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth- leading cause of death in the United States.
  • Someone develops Alzheimer’s every 66 seconds.
