Our Staff

Janet Whitten, BA, CDP, Outreach Coordinator

Janet Whitten, BA is the education outreach coordinator for Oaklawn Center on Aging and the administrative assistant for OCOA’s Schmieding Home Caregiver Training program. Janet’s expertise is graphic design and art. She is a Certified Dementia Practitioner, a DEEP Peer Educator, a Lay Leader for DSMP, CDSMP, a Coach for The Matter of Balance Program, and a certified Drums Alive instructor. Janet works with SHIIP and provides counseling for Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans, Extra Help, Medicare Savings Plan as well as Medicaid.

Janet is a graduate of the University of Arkansas, Little Rock with a Bachelor’s degree in Art. She has over 20 years experience with UAMS and is committed to helping others enrich their quality of life.

Valerie Claar, MSN, RN, CNE, CDP, CADDCT, Program Coordinator

Valerie Claar, Schmieding Home Caregiver Training Program Coordinator, received her undergraduate nursing degree from Henderson State University, and her master’s degree in nursing from University of Central Arkansas.  She is nationally certified through the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners as a Certified Dementia Practitioner, a Certified Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care Trainer, and a Certified First Responder Dementia Trainer. She is also a Peer Educator for the Diabetes Empowerment Education Program and a certified Ageless Grace instructor.

As a registered nurse since 1995, she has experience caring for clients across the lifespan.  Valerie is a lifelong resident of Hot Springs and is strongly committed to promoting the well-being of the community through the education of caregivers.  Valerie has been a nurse educator since 2007 and is certified through the National League for Nursing as a Certified Nurse Educator.

Megan Chance, LPN, CDP, Education Specialist

Megan has received her nursing education at Rich Mountain Community College. She has been a nurse since 2004. She has a diverse nursing background including in patient nursing, clinical research, long term care and administration. She is also a Peer Educator for the Diabetes Empowerment Education Program and a certified Ageless Grace instructor. Megan’s enthusiasm for educating caregivers inspires students to achieve his or her career goals!
