{"id":1278,"date":"2017-06-05T16:45:47","date_gmt":"2017-06-05T21:45:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uamscaregiving.org\/fortsmith\/?p=1278"},"modified":"2017-06-05T16:45:47","modified_gmt":"2017-06-05T21:45:47","slug":"free-family-caregiver-workshop-on-june-30th","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uamscaregiving.org\/fortsmith\/2017\/06\/05\/free-family-caregiver-workshop-on-june-30th\/","title":{"rendered":"Free Family Caregiver Workshop on June 30th"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"post-content\">\n<div class=\"pf-content\">\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/uamscaregiving.org\/\">Schmieding Home Caregiver Training Program<\/a> of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) will hold a free Family Caregiver Workshop June 30\u00a0for those who would like to learn about caring for an adult with dementia or Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop, which is open to the public, will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Fort Smith Public Library at 3201 Rogers Ave in Fort Smith.\u00a0 For more information or to register, please call 479- 478-8819 or email <a href=\"mailto:paclark@uams.edu\">paclark@uams.edu<\/a>. A light lunch and drinks will be provided. Space is limited.<\/p>\n<p>The program is sponsored by UAMS\u2019 Arkansas Geriatric Education Collaborative and AARP Arkansas. The collaborative is funded by a Health Resources and Services Administration grant of $2.4 million for a Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop will be taught by Patricia Clark, B.S.N.\/R.N., education director for the UAMS West Central Center on Aging.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop will present an overview of dementia and Alzheimer\u2019s disease and provide caregiving tips that maintain respect, dignity and quality of life for the person living with dementia. Information will also be presented on nutrition, behavior, communication techniques and activities.<\/p>\n<p>About 452,000 family caregivers in Arkansas provide an estimated $4.7 billion in unpaid care each year, helping their loved ones with bathing and dressing, cooking meals, transportation, finances and complex medical tasks like wound care and injections.<\/p>\n<p>AARP Arkansas State Director Herb Sanderson said support for family caregivers, including making available free training opportunities, represents a top priority for AARP, which has more than 310,000 members in Arkansas age 50 or older.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamily caregivers are the backbone of our care system, serving a crucial role in helping older Arkansans and other loved ones remain in their own homes and communities,\u201d Sanderson said. \u201cBecause of their tireless efforts, older parents, spouses and other loved ones are able to live independently at home and in the community \u2014 where they want to be.
