However, it’s not always a trained, paid individual who is the caregiver. More often than not, the family bears the biggest responsibility for caregiving. In an effort to equip families and friends to better care for their loved ones, the SHCT offers Family Caregiver Workshops on Dementia and Physical Caregiving Skills. These are free and open to the community and offered periodically throughout the year.

Another big need of family caregivers is a BREAK! To avoid caregiver burnout, periodic respite care is an absolute necessity at times. However, trained, capable, knowledgeable and trustworthy care is not always readily available to families. To help families and friends feel comfortable leaving their loved one for a short time, the SHCT offered Respite Education and Support Tools (REST) respite training on September 24th. This training was sponsored by the Arkansas Lifespan Respite Coalition. Attendees spent the day learning from certified REST trainer Bethany Cheatham, RN. Lunch was provided by LifeTouch Hospice, and the day was a great networking opportunity and offered emotional support for all who attended.

If you are caring for someone, need a break, or are interested in more training as a caregiver, call us at 870.639.1744 for more information. We have classes offered constantly, and would love to help you and your family navigate the world of caregiving!

The Schmieding Home Caregiver Training Center was created with the ultimate goal of improving the lives of those needing care in our community by training capable, responsible caregivers.
